Okay, if Tiger is the best, who's the second best of all time? |
Mr. Samurai May 02, 08 | Number two MUST be Jack Nicklaus. Any way you cut it, it comes down to Tiger-Nicklaus, or Nicklaus-Tiger. Stats, impact, off-course endeavors/accomplishments, and clutchness. Any important category you look at to determine the greatest golfer ever, Tiger and Jack will occupy the top two. That being said, how can you not think Tiger is going to break Nicklaus' 18 majors? I mean, that's the gold standard, right? The only way Tiger Woods is not going to end up being considered, unanimously, the greatest golfer ever will be if some tragedy befalls him. He takes care of his body and has that un-human determination and hunger to be the best, so he's not going to beat himself or wear himself down. For all that I just mentioned, nobody else can be considered on par or better than Nicklaus. Jack Nicklaus has won 18 majors. He is second only to Sam Snead in career PGA Tour victories. One of my major criteria for being an all-time great in any sport is clutchness. Jack certainly has been clutch MANY times in his career. He's enormously successful off the course. Finally, there are two categories where Nicklaus is far superior to Tiger (at least right now): second-place finishes in majors and longevity. Jack Nicklaus finished second 19 times in majors! That means he finished either first or second 37 times in majors! That is absolutely crazy! Tiger's getting closer, but still a long way away. Nicklaus' longevity might be the best part of his legacy. I mean, what he did in 1986 at the age of 46 at the Masters - pure brilliance. And remember what he pulled off in the 1998 Masters? Finishing 6th at 58-years old? Who does that? So ... it's really quite simple. I'm sure a lot of old-school and old-timers still consider Jack the best. I got no problem with that. But Tiger is definitely second even to those people. |
Chad Klassen May 13, 08 | The second best golfer is Jack Nicholas. It's fairly clear that Nicholas' PGA record of 18 major championship will be surpassed by Tiger, who merely in his prime and has lots of great years ahead of him on the golf course. Even if Nicholas turned a few of those 19 second-place finishes into majors and finish with more than 20, Woods would still break the outstanding record. There's no question that Tiger's the best golfer that we've witness, and should be considered the greatest of all-time, but since Nicholas hold the mark for golf majors, that makes him a close second in the golf world. |
