After last week's Barclays, an analyst said something along the lines of "another week, another surprise winner in this year of the underdog."  What I would have said, and what he probably wanted to say, was: "another week, another random guy wins a big PGA Tour event in this year of the disappointing finish."  For the 3rd week in a row (and what seems like the millionth time this year) a little-known player won a big tournament (PGA=Yang, Wyndham=Ryan Moore, Barclays=Heath Slocum).  But does anyone really think these guys will be consistent winners?  Let's take Y.E. Yang for instance.  Yang took down Tiger at the PGA this summer.  He didn't just edge Tiger out, he beat him soundly.  Only minutes after winning the tournament Yang was already saying that he didn't want a rematch!

Florida is a Golfer’s haven and has been one of the top spots to hit the greens. Frankly, I think it’s a bore and the humidity doesn’t support my goal of looking hot on the links. My hair goes flat, make-up runs down my face and I suffer from what the locals refer to as Swamp Ass. You can figure it out. I drunkenly golfed many of Orlando’s renowned courses but none caught my affection more than that of Sugarloaf Mountain.

They say that of the few industries that benefit from a rocky, let’s face it – horrifying, economy is the alcohol business. Indirectly, there is another industry related to booze consumption, and that’s sports. You guessed it.

Retief, meet Rory. Rory, please explain to Retief what happens you talk smack about that golfer named Tiger. What’s next, Ernie Els dismissing Tiger’s 19 hole playoff victory as “been there, done that, no big deal.”

Like many others, watching PGA professionals play the sport I love sparks awe in me similar to that of a three-toed sloth watching a NASCAR race.  The ease in which they manage their rounds, the touch of their putts, and of course, the accuracy of their wedge play.  However, a once a year, we golf fans get a treat.  The 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass.

Yep, you heard me right.  Tiger Woods is under-appreciated.  He may be appreciated by the die-hard sports and golf fans and some of the media.  But, by and large, I don't think so.  For those that have given golf a try, you know how hard it is.  For those that have played it at a high level competitively, it's absolutely astonishing what Tiger is doing.  Why?  Because it's simply not a game that's as easy as he's making it look.  It's a game that screws with your head and pulls out the demons from within.  Take some quite, shy guy on the golf course and you'll see and hear things that you never thought was possible from that same guy.  Thus, my main argument is that Tiger's head/brain/mind is SOOOOO underrated and under-appreciated.

Six days and not counting.  This might be the first time in 20 years or so that I haven't been checking days off my calendar on route to opening day.  In fact, until right now, 2pm on Wednesday (we'll call it a long lunch break) I haven't even watched more than an inning  of a Boston Red Sox spring training game.  What's wrong with me? Am I sick? Has two World Series Titles in four years spoiled me?  Is it because the Big Schill got hurt and I'll miss seeing his lack of spring training stomach?  Or could it be because Coco Crisp just scooped up a ground ball to his right and when trying to throw it in to second, the ball went about 10 feet straight into the ground? (You know opposing Scouts just dropped their offer of a 50th round pick to 100th round pick for Coco straight up).  The answer is no, no, no and no. The truth of the matter is, for the time being anyway, my usual Fenway fever has been sidetracked by the Gang Green.

No, not just big-name PGA Tour golfers like Tiger Woods or Vijay Singh, but large men that announcers feel the need to point out. As Mark Calcavecchia was walking to his next shot at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the broadcasters could not help commenting on his physique. This was not only one time either folks – it happened each and every time he was shown making a shot. They simply couldn’t resist and had to mention how heavy he is - cracking jokes about exercise and dietary choices. This phenomenon is not only reserved for Mr. Calcavecchia but haunts every golfer that is not built like Tiger Woods or Zach Johnson. John Daly and Craig “The Walrus” Stadler certainly get their share of ribbing as well.

The Target World Challenge is happening at the Sherwood Country Club this weekend. I had it on while I was doing some work and then it hit me…why are the sports journalists asking these guys the same odd question?
